CVNE Cune Rioja Crianza 2014

James Suckling 89pts:

A fresh and easy Rioja that shows plum and cherry character. Hints of cream. Mushroom, too. Medium body, low tannins and a crisp finish. Delicious now.

Wine Advocate 88pts:

I caught the 2014 Cune Crianza a couple of months before they started bottling it, but I wanted to preview it. It's a light and red fruit-driven Crianza matured in oak barrels for one year. This is the canonical blend of 85 % Tempranillo and 15% between Garnacha and Mazuelo. The wine aims for some consistency across vintages, as its drinkers do not want a lot of surprises. 2014 was a cooler year, but as the grapes took more time to ripen, perhaps they got slightly riper; it shows aromas of damsons and very ripe plums with hints of raisins.

Wine Spectator 88

This firm red shows black cherry, plum, toast and tar notes, with light but assertive tannins that give way to a fresh and juicy finish. Drink now through 2022.

From the winemaker:

The first wine of this winery was named after its initials. At the beginning a red ‘clarete’ wine was made as a fine wine in the style of the Bordeaux “Claret” produced by the great chateaux’s of the Medoc. This wine, formerly known as ‘Tercer Año’ or ‘3rd year’, is today called ‘Crianza’.

Fermentation in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures of grapes from our
vineyards in La Rioja Alta. The malolactic fermentation takes place in vats and then
the wine is aged in American oak barrels for a year, during which it acquires
aromatic balance that characterizes him, as his finesse and overall expression.

The 2014 harvest amount exceeds the previous two vintages.. During the year, the
climatology was favourable resulting in a vegetative cycle that allows to expect a
good vintage Both the summer months and the harvest time have been marked by
more rain than expected. Again preventive treatments performed in our vineyards,
such as thinning clusters and leafless have allowed us to obtain a high quality
grapes. The optimum time to harvest began the 23rd September, when we started
harvesting white grapes and continued with red grapes, until it was finished on 22nd
October with good perspectives.
