Domaine de la Cote Bloom's Field Santa Rita Hills Pinot Noir 2013

Vinous 93pts:

The 2013 Pinot Noir Bloom's Field is utterly beguiling from the very first taste. Layers of flavor build through the mid-palate and finish, where the 2013 shows a real sense of verticality in its structure. Dark red cherry, plum, spice and new leather meld into the expressive finish. The co-fermentation of Calera and Mount Eden clones, along with the unique personality of this site yield a Pinot Noir long on complexity and nuance. Today, the Bloom's Field appears to be holding back much of its power. There is plenty of potential here. The 2013 was done with 90% stems, all nicely integrated.

From the winemaker:

The 2013 single vineyard Bloom’s Field is from a 7 ½ acre parcel of iron-laden clay loam over shale that lies on the western edge of Domaine. Bloom’s Field faces gently to the south but has a clear view west to the Pacific Ocean and therefore is unprotected from the marine influences of wind and fog. The environmental pressures have a profound impact on the growth of the vines, the morphology of the clusters and the textures, flavors and aromas of the wine. These unusually small clusters and berries produce a Pinot Noir of concentration and depth of flavor while the constant cooling winds preserve high levels of natural acidity that give the wines their great energy. Aromas of fresh crushed raspberry, geraniums and undersbrush are matched with flavors of cracked peppercorns and hints of salt and nori. Bloom’s Field is always 100% whole bunches and aged for 20 months in 20% new Ermitage barrels. This wine will live a decade or longer and will continue to gain in complexity and sleekness. 771 cases bottled. 100% whole bunches. 12.5% alcohol.
