Ruby red. Primary aromatics of cherry, mint, violet and bakers chocolate. On the palate, the Grenache shows its rocky soil origins, with creamed black cherry fruit and subtle complexities of Provencal spices. The palate impression is medium-bodied and seductive, with just the right amount of grip on the finish for structure and definition.
Charlie Sawyer’s Grenache vineyard sits high above Ukiah in Mendocino at 1000 feet elevation. This gently sloping, southwest facing vineyard is 2.64 acres planted to the Chateau de Beaucastel clone of Grenache. This is our 6th vintage at this idyllic site, where owner Charlie Sawyer and vineyard manager Peter Chevalier have created one of the top Grenache sites on the North Coast. 2012 was an ideal harvest in Northern California, with moderate weather, no real heat spikes and even ripening across all our vineyards. The crop was abundant but so was the fruit profile, and the resulting wines also have plenty of structure for excellent ageing potential. We picked Sawyer at dawn on October 12, achieving optimum ripeness throughout the block. Our Grenache is fermented with its indigenous yeast and macerated on the skins for three weeks. Then aged in seasoned French barrels for twenty two months and bottled without fining or filtration. After bottling, we age another twelve months before release.
