Tatomer Paragon Edna Valley Gruner Veltliner 2014

Vinous 91pts:

Green-tinged gold. Vibrant citrus pith and green apple scents, with deeper herb and sweet butter qualities sneaking in late. Chewy, sharply focused and refreshingly bitter, offering fresh lemon and pear skin flavors and a hint of tarragon. Finishes with strong mineral bite, building spiciness and very good persistence. Graham Tatomer is making some of the best New World renditions of Germanic varieties that I know, and his pricing is extremely keen. Fans of Austrian wines should give these bottlings a serious look, as they reflect quite clearly Tatomer's year and two additional harvests working with the highly esteemed Emmerich Knoll in the Wachau. Tatomer has now extended his reach, albeit just a bit, by making a pinot noir, a nod to the years he spent working as assistant winemaker alongside Greg Brewer, of Melville and Brewer-Clifton, a position that he left last year to devote full time to his eponymous winery.
